be fit -what is in a name?

The title of this blog is “be fit”.

Why “be” and not “get”? Isn’t every woman and her cat selling you ways to “get fit”? Why be different?

It is all about the correct mind set. Getting fit is a transient thing, an inconvenience to be endured. Being fit is a permanent thing, a way to live.

Getting fit can be stressful and it is never achieved fast enough. It has an end. Getting fit doesn’t contain a plan for what to do after fitness is achieved.

Being fit also requires work, but the point of being fit is not to achieve a specific end state within a finite period. It is to find a permanent lifestyle in which being and staying fit is relatively effortless.

I must credit James Clear’s Atomic Habits for the distinction between “be” and “get”. Clear convincingly makes the point that if you want to change some aspect of yourself, the best thing to do is focus not on the WHAT or the HOW questions, but instead focus on the WHO question. Only once you have a firm conception of WHO you want to BE can you start adapting all your behaviour to that goal.

If you want to be fit, then be a fit person.

Today.

Don’t worry that your body is lagging - that’s just physics. Start being a fit person - today. Start adopting your fit person’s habits - today. Your body will catch up eventually (after a few well earned breathers) but that’s your body’s problem, not yours.

In other posts in the blog I will explore the story of how I became fit and what I am doing to stay that way. The stories will be told from a personal perspective and are not intended to be the definitive guide to becoming or staying fit for others although hopefully you will find them inspirational or at least amusing &/or informative.
